Handbag Questions Answered
Useful distinctions for the beginning of a research file. Open a question for the short answer and a route into the guides.
Does a recognizable signature prove authenticity?
No. A woven surface, clasp or motif is a research clue, not proof. Authentication requires model-specific evidence and qualified assessment.
Neither a familiar logo nor a single code can establish the whole history of an object. We do not authenticate bags or assess listings. Read about design signatures.
Is leather always preferable to coated canvas?
No. Weight, flexibility, care and intended use differ. Coated canvas can suit some uses better; its trim and coating still need attention.
Compare the entire assembly, including the lining and attachments. A material category is not a universal quality rating. Compare textile and coated surfaces.
Are all luxury handbags hand-stitched?
No. Methods vary by house, model and component. Hand assembly, hand finishing and hand stitching are different claims.
Ask what the statement covers. A hand-finished edge does not establish how every seam was sewn. Read the construction overview.
What does a house’s founding date tell me?
It establishes a historical starting point. It does not date a particular bag or demonstrate continuity in materials, ownership or technique.
Keep the foundation date, model introduction and production period separate. Explore origins in context.
Which silhouette is most practical?
The one that suits your contents and carry needs. Test the opening, strap length and loaded weight rather than choosing from a category name alone.
External measurements can exaggerate usable space when a bag is tapered or divided. Use the silhouette comparison guide.
Can one conditioner work on every bag?
No. Suede, patent finishes, textiles and coated surfaces need different treatment. Start with the maker’s instructions for the exact material.
If the finish is uncertain or already deteriorating, seek advice before applying anything. Read about intervention and repair.
Does a high price guarantee resale value?
No. Condition, demand, fees and changing tastes affect resale. This index does not make investment forecasts.
Care records support accurate description, but they cannot guarantee a future sale or price. Build an evidence record.
Are the illustrated bags actual branded products?
No. Our anonymous renders explain design concepts. They do not reproduce or identify a named house’s product.
Illustrations are not photographic evidence of a maker’s methods. Read our editorial approach.
